How will my outdoor pieces age?
Each material, when left in the elements, patinas a little differently. We have put together a comprehensive guide of what to expect in the finish. Every region and climate can create varying results but the slides below cover the basics of natural oxidation.
Copper
Outside in the elements, Natural Copper pretty quickly turns to a light brown and within a few months typically turns to a medium/dark brown. It will stay dark brown for a pretty lengthy time before eventually turning black. The Copper will then slowly start to get little spots of turquoise and eventually turn into a Verdigris patina. We offer this patina for those that don't want to wait 15-20 years for this desired look.
Brass/Bronze
We use the terms Brass and Bronze interchangeably because there is only about 1-2% difference in the alloys. Brass/Bronze ages very similar to Copper and in fact when they both reach the Black phase of their patina, they are very hard to tell apart. Unlike Copper, Brass/Bronze is not likely to reach the Verdigris Patina color, rather it would stay Black.
Zinc
Outdoor Natural Zinc will start to patina pretty quickly with white oxidation. It will get just a little bit darker as it ages and with the white rust it makes a really nice aged gray look on the material.
Stainless Steel
The nature of Stainless Steel is to resist corrosion so due to it's make up, it stays just about the same as the day the piece was purchased. If your location an is an ocean locale, you could experience some oxidation on outdoor 304 Stainless so if that's the case please contact us and we can discuss options.
Powder Coat
A Powder Coat finish, along with Stainless Steel, is a solid choice if you want the product to look the same as the day you got it for the life of the piece. Powder Coat is similar to paint but is more durable due the application using charged ions for bonding.
