Outdoor products like chimney caps are made to wear in the elements and age over time. This is the case for our Copper, Brass, and Zinc finishes. Stainless and Powder Coated finishes should remain similar to their original finish for the life of the product.

The Capstone Chimney Cap is designed for homes with modern, contemporary, or Prairie-inspired architecture where clean lines and minimal visual impact are desired. Its broad horizontal form emphasizes the roofline while providing full-coverage protection for the entire chimney structure. Unlike taller decorative caps, this low-profile design integrates seamlessly with modern homes, making it especially well suited for new construction and architect-designed residences. Custom fabrication ensures a precise fit for masonry, stone, brick, or stucco chimneys, delivering superior weather resistance, long service life, and a refined architectural appearance that standard factory caps cannot match.

How to Size a Chimney Cap

Many chimneys are stone and therefore irregular so it's important when measuring that you are consider the largest dimension you will need to cover. Take a measurement of the "X" length and "Y" Length and then add .5" to each measurement and this will tell you what size your cap needs to be. For instance if a chimney is 48" x 28", the cap would be 48.5" x 28.5". Please refer to our How to Size Guide.

Material + Construction

We source the purest metals from reputable dealers. Material Thickness varies depending on metal but goes as follows: Copper (20oz, .03"), Bronze (20ga, .03"), Stainless Steel (22ga, .03") and Zinc (18ga .04"). All of our chimney caps are fabricated with a mixture of solid rivet and soldered joinery.

Wood Burning vs. Gas Requirements

All of our caps are nominally made for modern gas burning fireplaces, however, we can customize each of them for wood burning applications. We calculate this by the size of the flue and compare it to the square footage of net free ventilation area in the mesh according to standard code. What this means is that if you have a larger flue or multiple flues, we may have to raise the height of the screen to meet the requirements. If it's a wood burning fireplace it must have the screen to act as a spark arrestor.

Shipping + Installation

Chimney Caps are shipped via LTL in a solid crate where they are bolted to the deck for protection. When you receive the cap you will have to take the top shroud portion off to uncrate it. We supply cleats to mount the chase cover portion to the chimney that allow for height adjustability. Once the chase cover portion is mounted, the top shroud is placed back on and screwed into place. We send installation instructions that take you throught step by step upon ordering.

Chimney Protection

Choosing a full-coverage chimney cap is one of the most effective ways to protect a masonry or prefabricated chimney from long-term damage. Unlike small flue caps that cover only the exhaust pipe, a custom full-coverage chimney cap protects the entire chimney chase, preventing water intrusion, rust, freeze-thaw deterioration, and costly structural repairs. These caps are especially important for large chimneys, stone or brick chimneys, and modern gas or wood-burning fireplaces, where moisture can quickly degrade internal components. A properly fitted metal chimney cap — fabricated in durable materials such as Copper, Stainless Steel, Zinc, or Bronze — also helps keep out animals, debris, and wind-driven rain while improving the overall appearance of the home. Because each chimney structure is unique, a custom chimney cap built to exact dimensions provides superior performance, longer lifespan, and a clean architectural finish compared to standard off-the-shelf caps.

Patina + Care

Fine metals like Copper, Bronze, and Zinc are living materials and they will age as such. Within just a couple months you will notice significant patina naturally happening and this is part of what makes these chimney caps so beautiful. Stainless Steel and Powder Coated chimney caps are corrosion resistant so they will likely stay about the same for the life the cap. This does depend on a lot of factors such as temperature and moisture in the air. Chimney Caps require little to no care. Simply install and let nature create a beautiful finish on them.

Capstone Chimney Cap FAQ

Will the Capstone Chimney Cap work for wood burning and gas fireplaces?

The Capstone Chimney Cap is engineered primarily for modern gas fireplaces and decorative exterior installations. If you plan to use it with a wood-burning fireplace, please contact us before ordering so we can confirm proper ventilation and heat requirements.

What is a chase cover chimney cap?

A chase cover chimney cap is a protective top that seals the entire chimney chase while allowing exhaust to vent through an opening or screen. Unlike small flue caps, this style provides full coverage, improved weather protection, and a clean architectural appearance.

How do I measure my chimney for the correct cap size?

Measure the outside dimensions of the chimney chase or structure, not just the flue pipe. For the best fit, measurements should be taken at the top surface where the cap will sit. We recommend reviewing our sizing guide or contacting us if you are unsure.

What materials is the Capstone Chimney Cap available in?

This cap is offered in premium architectural metals including Copper, Brass/Bronze, Zinc, and stainless steel. Each material provides long-term durability and a distinctive appearance suited for high-end exterior applications.

Will Copper, Bronze, or Zinc change color outdoors?

Yes. Copper, Bronze, and Zinc naturally develop a patina when exposed to the elements. This aging process is normal and creates the rich, weathered appearance these metals are known for. Stainless Steel and Powder Coat maintain a more consistent look over time.

What thickness are the materials used?

The Capstone Chimney Cap is fabricated from heavy-gauge architectural metals, including approximately 20 oz Copper, 20 ga Brass/Bronze, 20ga Stainless Steel, and .04" Zinc. These thicknesses provide structural strength and long service life.

Do I need a screen on my chimney cap?

Screens help prevent animals, debris, and sparks from entering or exiting the chimney. They are often recommended for safety and maintenance, particularly in wooded areas. If you are unsure whether a screen is appropriate for your application, we can help guide you.

Is this chimney cap purely decorative or fully functional?

The Capstone Chimney Cap is both decorative and functional. It protects the chimney structure from rain, snow, and debris while enhancing the architectural character of the home.

How durable is this chimney cap in harsh weather?

When properly installed, the cap is designed to withstand long-term outdoor exposure, including wind, precipitation, and temperature fluctuations. The seamless construction minimizes potential failure points compared to multi-piece designs.

Where is the Capstone Chimney Cap manufactured?

Each cap is designed and manufactured in the United States using high-quality materials and skilled fabrication techniques.
