Batten Straps are a unique design feature used on our metal awnings to mimic standing seams while providing added strength and smoother curves than thin sheet metal seams. The quantity of Batten Straps is determined by the width of the awning and can be referenced on our specification sheet.

Outdoor products like awnings are made to wear in the elements and age over time. This is the case for our Copper, Brass, and Zinc finishes. Stainless and Powder Coated finishes should remain similar to their original finish for the life of the product.

Protection for Doors and Windows

A metal awning provides practical protection for entryways and windows by helping divert rain, snow, and direct sunlight away from the opening. By shielding these areas from the elements, awnings help protect doors, trim, and surrounding materials while improving everyday usability during changing weather conditions.

Timeless Architectural Design

The Prairie Metal Awning features a structured architectural profile inspired by traditional Craftsman design. Installed above a door or window, it creates a refined focal point that complements Craftsman homes, bungalows, and other classic residential architecture where strong horizontal lines and refined metal details define the character of the structure.

How to Size an Awning

When selecting an awning, it is common for the awning to extend beyond the door or window opening to provide better weather protection and visual balance.

Measure the width of the opening and add approximately 6–12 inches so the awning extends 3–6 inches past each side. Projection from the wall is typically 20–30 inches, depending on the level of coverage desired.

Ideal Locations for Metal Awnings

Metal awnings are commonly installed above front doors, windows, garage man doors, and patio entrances. They add architectural depth to exterior walls while helping reduce direct rain exposure on doors and windows. Many homeowners also use metal awnings to create a more defined and welcoming entryway.

Material + Construction

We source the purest metals from reputable dealers. Material thickness varies depending on the metal: Copper (24oz, .03"), Bronze (20ga, .03"), Stainless Steel (20ga, .04") and Zinc (18ga .04"). All of our awnings are fabricated with soldered joinery.

Built for Long-Term Durability

Metal awnings are valued for their ability to withstand harsh outdoor conditions including heavy rain, strong sun, and snow loads. Compared to fabric alternatives, metal awnings offer greater durability, low maintenance, and long service life.

Shipping + Installation

Awnings are shipped via LTL in a solid crate where they are bolted to the deck for protection. When you receive the awning you will have to take the shroud portion off the mounting bracket to uncrate it. Simply use a level and mount the mounting bracket at the desired height, set the awning shroud on it and screw the bracket and the shroud together from underneath. Then use the holes on the bottom of the back panel to tie the sides to the wall.

Patina + Care

Fine metals like Copper, Bronze, and Zinc are living materials and they will age as such. Within just a couple months you will notice significant patina naturally happening and this is part of what makes these awnings so beautiful. Stainless Steel and Powder Coated awnings are corrosion resistant so they will likely stay about the same for the life of the awning. This does depend on a lot of factors such as temperature and moisture in the air. Awnings require little to no care. Simply install and let nature create a beautiful finish on them.

What materials are available for the Prairie Awning?

The Prairie Awning is available in premium architectural metals including Copper, Zinc, Brass/Bronze, and Stainless Steel. Each material offers excellent durability and develops its own distinctive appearance over time.

Will the metal finish change over time?

Yes. Natural metals such as Copper, Zinc, and Bronze will gradually develop a natural patina as they are exposed to the elements. This process creates unique variations in color and texture that many homeowners value for their character.

Are the awnings custom sized?

Yes. Each Prairie Awning is fabricated to order, allowing the size to be customized for the specific door or window opening. This ensures the awning fits the scale of the architecture and provides proper coverage.

How far should an awning extend over a door or window?

A common guideline is for the awning to extend approximately 6–12 inches beyond each side of the opening, with a projection that provides sufficient protection from rain and sun. The ideal size can vary depending on the architectural style and the amount of coverage desired.

Are metal awnings durable in harsh weather?

Yes. Metal awnings are highly durable and designed to withstand changing outdoor conditions including rain, snow, and strong sunlight. Compared to fabric awnings, metal awnings typically require less maintenance and offer a longer service life.

Can the Prairie Awning be installed on different exterior materials?

Yes. Prairie Awnings can typically be installed on a variety of exterior wall surfaces including brick, stone, siding, and stucco. Installation methods may vary depending on the structure of the wall.
